Enchanted Strangers

Children's Social Media Safety Campaign

Working with the fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, I analyzed and boiled down the overarching lesson “Don’t talk to strangers” and re-framed it for a contemporary Social Media driven audience with the tagline "Don’t Friend Strangers!" This Social Media Safety Campaign aimed at Elementary School children K-5th Grade. As with the original fairy tale, this is a great lesson to communicate to our modern day children who are using computers and getting on the Internet at a very early age. The overall goal of the design is to communicate the dangers of “friending” people online that they do not know.

The look and feel, along with the familiar characters resonate with elementary aged children. My graphic style is inspired by contemporary video games, cartoons, comics, and toys popular with this demographic. I was particularly drawn to the dark and creepy nature of Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as the visual structure of the characters in South Park and Lalaloopsy, and the textural styling seen in Little Big Planet.  That combined with a collectibles approach similar to baseball cards and Garbage Pail Kids, I decided that the deliverables would be a series of collateral materials that would get children excited and want to collect the  characters in the series.
